Bringing The Magic of the Way to Happiness to Punjab, India
Punjab, once “the most prosperous state of India,” today faces a crisis in agriculture and is besieged by drug abuse. As many as 67 percent of rural households have at least one drug addict in the family and, each week, at least one dies of overdose. Adding to the turmoil, political tensions in Punjab have been high since Indian-Pakistani relations sharply deteriorated in September of last year. This followed a deadly attack by militants on an Indian army base.
It was time to bring The Way to Happiness to Punjab.
One TWTH India member decided the best way to introduce the program would be through the Radha Swami, a major spiritual movement of which she is also a follower. She approached Sant Subhash Chander Singh Ji, guru of the Radha Swami. Reading Precept #2, “Be Temperate,” and seeing the “mustard fields” custom cover—a recognized symbol of prosperity to Punjabis—the guru approved the booklet and invited its distribution at their annual spiritual gathering in Saidpur, Punjab.
TWTH India members distributed more than 7,000 copies of the booklets. Following this, a request came to do seminars at the local Radha Swami school. Seeing the results on students, school officials were inspired and added a “Happiness” program to their curriculum based on the book.
“But good news also goes across the border. If we are able to spread The Way to Happiness across Punjab it will not only handle India, it will also handle Pakistan.”
“We are fortunate to have such a book in our school,” said the principal of Tej Rasila International High School. “Students will read this and even make their parents and their grandparents read the book. It is a complete guide to the children.”
The Director of TWTH India, knows with confidence what they are doing means they are on the way to salvaging Punjab. “I had already seen the magic of [usage] drops in other states,” he said. “But good news also goes across the border,” he adds about the political tensions in that area. “If we are able to spread The Way to Happiness across Punjab it will not only handle India, it will also handle Pakistan.”
